Despite the early start and a weakened squad without the participation of our SG partner Bielefeld, the mood was great and the weather was at its best.

In the first match, the ladies faced Karlsruhe SV. However, they struggled to find their rhythm and couldn’t find an answer to the strong Karlsruhe side. As a result, four tries were scored in the first half. Three more followed in the second half, leading to a final score of 0-39.

After a short break, the action continued against SG Darm MaGie. Here, the ladies showed they had more to give. They withstood the SG’s attack for several phases before the first try was scored on the wing. However, the response came quickly: Lea broke away down the short side after a scrum and was able to pull clear and touch down. The conversion was unsuccessful, making the score 5-5. Before the halftime whistle, the SG scored another try. The opponents remained on the front foot at the start of the second half, and the Pandas had to concede two more tries. But their fighting spirit remained unbroken. Fabienne broke away after a lineout within the 5-meter channel, and Sina was able to finish it off. Unfortunately, the conversion missed, so the game went to the opponents 20-10.

The final match against SG Mainz-Heusenstamm started on equal footing, and it took several phases before the first try was scored: after a scrum, Lea broke away again and ran into the in-goal area. Sina extended the lead to 7-0 with a successful conversion. However, the response from the Mainz players followed quickly, and they were able to score on the wing after a lineout. The conversion failed, so the halftime score was 7-5 for Bonn. The second half also started with plenty of phase play, and the Mainz defense resisted the Bonn side’s offload game. The first try went to the opponents, and they followed up with another shortly after. But the final points were to belong to the Pandas: with the last action of the game, Sina caught the Mainz kickoff, broke clean through the line, sprinted into the in-goal area, and rewarded herself with a successful conversion of her own try. The match ended in a very close 15-14 win for the opponents. Since they were playing outside of the official rankings, the match was still counted as a win for Bonn.

The tournament ended with a fifth-place finish. Considering the starting situation, it was a decent result—we are particularly pleased that three Pandas completed their first tournament with flying colors. Among them was Lea, who was awarded ‘Skill of the Day’ for her breaks from the scrum. The ‘Hammer’ for impressive tackles went to Ana, and ‘Panda of the Day’ was Fabienne for her outstanding commitment.

As always, thanks go to our coach for the great support and to the fans who traveled with us. Many thanks also to the pool players from SG Darm MaGie and SG Mainz-Heusenstamm who supported us! The next tournament will take place on May 30 on home soil, and the Pandas are looking forward to proving their skills in front of what will hopefully be a large crowd.

Text: Annika Höcker

Images: Annika Höcker, Anke Rolfes

Third League Tournament Division B West: The Pandas visit Karlsruhe On May 9, the Pandas set off early to compete in the next league tournament in Karlsruhe.
