At least I can’t explain otherwise why the U14 games on March 21 were such a pleasure to watch – it can’t have been down to the parents, at least not in every case. Because on the touchline there were some who knew so little about the rules of rugby that – just like me – they often didn’t know which team was actually in the lead.

The fact that the games were so worth watching also means that the Cologne-Bonn team played about as well as the Maastricht-Aachen team, or the Düsseldorf Dragons. But sometimes the points come quickly! – for example, when RCBRS player No. 11 (Hugo from Cologne) intercepted an opponent’s pass, he was at the try line with the rugby ball less than ten seconds later. He did that twice.

And it also means that the players – compared to the U12, or at least the U12 as I remember it – have internalized the rules much better, so the whistle didn’t have to go constantly.
And although there were already several moments where I, as a spectator, thought, “Oof! That was tough!”, and I flinched a bit just from watching, all the players were always back on their feet straight away.
Nobody cried. Nobody talked about “unfair,” not even when their own team lost by a very narrow margin. The kids learned a lot there. Not just running faster, passing more safely, and tackling lower.

Really: a huge compliment to the coaches!

Of course, what made the tournament a success wasn’t just the kids’ good play, but also the great organization by the volunteers. On the pitch, everyone knew who was playing when. There were no coaches looking for kids or kids looking for their team. The line for burgers was never long and there were enough – over a hundred? – for everyone (very important!), even though the cheese is said to have been very good.
Let’s hope that all the guests from outside Bonn got home safely. Because a few hundred meters from the RCBRS club grounds, in the Rheinaue, 50,000 Kurds celebrated their traditional New Year festival, Newroz. And to avoid traffic chaos and make it easier for the Kurdish visitors to leave, the police completely closed Bonn’s Südbrücke in both directions in the afternoon.

Text: Wolf Kantelhardt

Pictures: Thomas Breidenbach

U14 put in a great performance at the home tournament What incredibly good work the RCBRS youth coaches have done.
