When they arrived and found a narrow and muddy pitch, the Lions prepared themselves for a tough and grueling match.

The Lions received the first kickoff and started with a strong initial run, followed by a fantastic clearing kick and subsequent chase that led to a knock-on and resulting offside penalty for Münster. The Lions decided to go for the posts, and the kick was effortlessly converted by fullback Harry Day—the Lions took a 3-0 lead in the first minute of play. After the following kickoff, another strong Lions advance in the following minutes led to some defensive actions at the halfway line before Münster slowly worked their way up the field through some unnecessary errors by Bonn.

Münster recognized the opportunity to keep the ball in play, executed some clever, quick tap kicks after penalties, and repeatedly exploited Bonn’s failure to retreat 10 meters, allowing them to advance effortlessly into Bonn’s 22-meter zone and apply real pressure, which eventually led to a yellow card for Bonn due to numerous scrum infringements. When Münster opted for the tap and attempted to score the first try of the match, the defense held firm at the try line for 5 minutes before finally managing to stop Münster over the line, resulting in a goal-line drop-out.

After the clearing kick, Münster launched another attack before a high tackle by Bonn’s number 8, Lenny, led to another yellow card. With Bonn now down to 13 men, Münster again sought the try in the next 5 minutes but was once more repelled by an absolutely tenacious and aggressive defense from Bonn. Eventually, Münster was penalized after a turnover and the Lions cleared the ball forward, where the rest of the half played out, resulting in a narrow halftime score of Münster 0 – 3 Bonn.

After a motivating halftime talk from coach James and Bonn’s kickoff to start the second half, Bonn tried to show more structure in their play and score additional points. However, the difficult weather conditions created a muddy and slippery ball. Consequently, the Lions were repeatedly overrun in the scrum. The pack showed discipline, however, managing to stabilize the scrums. This forced Münster to play out from the scrum and allowed the defensive pressure to be maintained. Bonn, on the other hand, benefited from Münster’s errors near the 22-meter line and Münster’s try line. The resulting penalties soon led to a 0-9 lead for Bonn thanks to top kicker Harry.

Eventually, Münster’s dominance in the scrum had to pay off, and after some strong scrums and drives they were once again at Bonn’s try line, and this time they wouldn’t be denied the try! After one of the Bonn players kicked the ball away with his leg, preventing a try, the referee finally awarded Münster a penalty try. This led to the third and final yellow card for Bonn, and with 15 minutes of play remaining, the game became even more difficult for Bonn, but the players refused to give up, and suddenly the tide turned: Bonn was finally able to play more with ball in hand and keep Münster in their own half through some excellent and clever kicks from Josh, Dan, and Harry. Bonn’s scrum found its form and won back some penalties before Bonn finally received a penalty directly in front of the posts in the 78th minute, which Josh converted this time, bringing the score to 7-12 for Bonn.

With the kickoff being the last play of the match, Münster kept the ball, but as throughout the entire game, they failed to break through Bonn’s defense, and eventually they played the ball out wide to try to go around the defense, which ended the game.

With a final score of 7-12 for Bonn, the Lions remain unbeaten so far and head strongly into the final phase of the league. There they will host Münster (11.04.), travel to Essen (18.04.) and Düsseldorf (02.05.), and then host Wiedenbrück (09.05.) for the last league match before hopefully playing in the final on 23.05. at a venue yet to be determined.

Player of the match: Immanuel Medek
Hammer of the Match: Josh Talbot

Line up:

Immanuel

Cristobal

Robert

Timo (C)

George

Max W.

Nassim

Lennart

Stean

Josh

Eric

Daniel

Ansgar

Jonas

Harry

Finishers:

Pablo

Felix

Coaches: James Ohslen, Prezemek Iwaniec

Text: Stean Herselman

Iron Defense Battle A sensational away victory built on an enormous defensive performance by the Lions!
