For the fourth game of the season, our Lions traveled to Br\u00fchl for their second away game against the hosts SG Rheinland. After last week’s win against D\u00fcsseldorf, Bonn, the league leaders, wanted to carry on the positive momentum and continue their winning streak. During the warm-up, the intensity and concentration of the Lions was clearly noticeable. The weather conditions were good for a rugby match: gray skies, but no rain and a soft pitch. Bonn started the game with slight changes to the starting line-up compared to the previous week.<\/p>\n
In contrast to the last game in D\u00fcsseldorf, the Lions came into the game much better from the start.
\nBonn dominated SG Rheinland offensively and defensively and scored a first try through their outside center Matt, who celebrated his comeback after his injury a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, this first try was not scored and the score remained 0:5 for Bonn. After the first try, Bonn continued to put the SG Rheinland defense under pressure. The Lions showed just how strong they are this season and Pablo scored the second try for the Lions after a fluid transition between forward and back-row phases.
\nThe score was now 0:12 after Matt’s successful conversion. Nevertheless, the Lions, who fought doggedly in defense, made a few mistakes and conceded a number of penalties. However, as the home team were unable to open up any gaps in the visitors’ defense and get close to the try line, they decided to take the first 3 points with a successful penalty kick. Bonn did not give up, however, and the players continued to press forward immediately and were able to keep possession and attack. After some strong phases, our number four, Pablo, once again managed to break through the defense and score his second try of the day and the third for our Lions. This time Harry kicked the successful conversion. The score at half-time was therefore 3:19 for Bonn!<\/p>\n
However, after the break and with a lead on the scoreboard, the Lions were quickly caught out by the intensity of SG Rheinland, who were determined to come back and win this game in front of their fans on their home court. Bonn’s defense struggled to keep up, which eventually led to a try for the home side. The seven points on the scoreboard brought the score to 10:19. Nevertheless, the visitors wanted to score more tries to not only win the game but also collect the bonus points and consolidate their current first place in the league. Bonn was warned after SG Rheinland’s try and the game stabilized again. Always keen to score more tries to get the bonus points, Bonn continued to attack and their hard work paid off when Matt scored his second try of the game. The Lions then scored another try and the final score of the match was 10:32 – a win for the Lions! Similar to the previous game in D\u00fcsseldorf, a strong team performance enabled the visitors to win the game and secure the bonus points.<\/p>\n
We would like to thank the referee on the one hand and SG Rheinland on the other for welcoming us to their home turf and making this game and a great weekend of rugby possible. However, the return match will not be long in coming and the team will face SG Rheinland again just one weekend later. We can’t wait to see who will come out on top!<\/p>\n
