After the spectacular win in the derby and a strong week of training, Bonn was determined to continue its winning streak against the reigning champions of the NRW regional league. However, the weather conditions for the game were a challenge; it was gray and cold and the pitch was muddy. After a positive start to the season, Bonn were keen to prove their ability to adapt to all teams and all conditions and fielded a different line-up to their last game.

However, the first half of the game did not go as planned for the Lions. After just a few minutes, the home side managed to score their first try and increase the score to 7:9. However, the score did not really reflect the course of the game. The Bonn Lions dominated the game, but were unable to break through the Dragons’ defense until Lenny was able to dive into the paint for the Lions’ first try of the day.
After Harry’s successful conversion, the score was 7:7. The next ten minutes of the game were very intense for both teams, especially in defense. With pressure and alternating moves between forwards and backs, both teams managed to score another try each. The try for Bonn was scored by Ansgar, who was back in the starting line-up for the first time this season!
Although many points had already been scored, both teams continued their attacks and played on instead of playing it safe and securing the game. In this lively back-and-forth, both teams once again managed to place a ball in the paint shortly before half-time. After both teams failed to score, the score was now 19-19 and it was time for a well-deserved half-time break for the Lions and the Dragons.

After the break, with the score at 19-19, Bonn could not rest as the team wanted to score more points to win the game and get the bonus point. The fierce battle in the first half led to some injuries and coach James was forced to make some substitutions. The second half didn’t start like the first, the Lions were able to impose their game. Within the first five minutes of the second half, Pablo scored the fourth try of the game for Bonn, securing the bonus point for the Lions. The try was increased and gave the visitors a 19:26 lead. Nevertheless, the Düsseldorfers were not discouraged and continued to play, as anything was still possible: a bonus point or even a win. The Lions remained strong in defense and were much more precise and aggressive than in the derby the previous week. Fewer mistakes were made and a strong team performance (both in offense and defense) could enable Bonn to hold on and clinch victory. However, the last ten minutes were exciting. Düsseldorf did not give up, kept up the pressure and ultimately found the decisive gap to score the try. However, luck was on Bonn’s side on this day, as the Düsseldorf kicker missed the uprights when he tried to score. The score of 24:26 kept the fans in attendance on the edge of their seats until the end, but neither team would make it over the line and so the Lions won a thrilling game at the end of this great day of rugby.

We would like to thank the Düsseldorfers for welcoming us and making an exciting game on their home turf possible and, of course, the great referee team. Congratulations also go out to Vernon on his first game in a Bonn jersey! We also wish the injured players a speedy and speedy recovery!

Awards:
Hammer of the Day – Nassim.
Man of the Match – Timo.

Starting Lineup
1 – Golden
2 – Vernon.
3 – Sam
4 – Pablo
5 – Florian
6 – Nassim
7 – Timo
8 – Lennart
9 – Stean
10 – Daniel
11 – Jonas
12 – Francesco
13 – Ansgar
14 – Benjamin
15 – Harry

Finishers:
16 – Doru
17 – Lutz
18 – Jacob
19 – Salih

Text: Vincent Martinet
Photos: Anna Schöneberger and Clara Schell-Hardin

Narrow victory against reigning champions The third game of the season and the first away game was on the agenda for our Lions on October 4.
