On the last weekend of September, the Lions played their second game of the season, the derby against Cologne II. Unlike last year, the first leg of this year’s derby took place at home in Bonn. After a convincing first game, which ended in a draw (36:36), this home game could not be a better opportunity for the RCBS to build positive momentum for the rest of the season. Perfect sunny conditions were on offer at kick-off, ideal for such an exciting game. The home side were also looking to continue their winning streak against their historic rivals, having won both games last year. <\/p>\n
The derby could begin! The first half went very well for the Lions and the fans in attendance did not have to wait long for the first increased try. Bonn continued to put Cologne’s defense under pressure with the power of its forwards. The visitors struggled to keep up with Bonn’s physical superiority and therefore decided to kick the ball to gain space and keep the Lions’ backline deep in their half. Thanks to good communication between the back three, however, they managed to keep the ball in the air and force Cologne to play with their hands more often. Bonn subsequently secured possession for long stretches and hardly allowed Cologne any opportunities to attack. Bonn took advantage of this and scored further tries in the course of the game, most of which were precisely increased by the fly-half. <\/p>\n
The Lions attacked consistently and pushed forward, using their backline to attack and often playing the ball wide with hands or kicks to the wings where spaces often opened up. Of particular note were some remarkable kicks from the Lions’ fly-half and good decisions from the wings which led to Christo’s fantastic try! After a very strong first half, the score was 47:0 for Bonn. <\/p>\n
Even though the score was clearly in Bonn’s favor, a derby is still a derby and the home team did not want to disappoint its fans by stopping playing or pursuing a defensive strategy. The second half began as the first had ended: Bonn put the opposition’s defense under pressure. After ten good first minutes and further attempts, the home side began to slow down and made more and more mistakes. Although the score continued to rise, the Lions were punished more and more in defence.
\nAfter several consecutive penalties, coach James decided to make the first substitutions. The substitutions had an effect and allowed Bonn to put further pressure on the Cologne team and score a few more tries. The second half was not as strong as the first and many small mistakes were made which affected the team’s attacking play and the flow of the game. Nevertheless, Bonn won this derby 100:0! <\/p>\n
We would like to thank Cologne II for traveling to Bonn this weekend and making this derby possible. We also wish the injured players from Cologne a speedy and speedy recovery! Once again we would like to thank the fair referee Max, our great matchday manager Alf and all the fans who came to cheer on the Lions and made this derby afternoon more than an easy game! <\/p>\n
