The NRW teams in the U15 and U18 age groups both went into the tournament with the aim of winning it. Alice and Lilly from Bonn were nominated in the U15, although Alice was unfortunately injured and did not take part in the tournament itself. Maya and Marie were nominated for the U18s. The coach of the U18s is Bonn youth coach Jan.

As only four state associations competed in the U15 age group, they had three matches spread over the day. Their opponents came from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg (RBW) and Berlin. A clear 56:00 victory was achieved against Bavaria. The supposedly decisive game against RBW followed. After many of the Wiedenbrückers in the NRW squad had lost out to SG Heidelberg the previous week, they now managed to win the game 33:12 in a game that was exciting from start to finish, cheered on by the fans, parents and the U18s. With the 46:07 victory in the last game against Bavaria, the team deservedly secured gold. Congratulations to the team led by former Bonn men’s coach Melvine Smith!

In the U18 category, 6 regional associations competed: Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg and NRW. After the group draw in the morning, it was clear that NRW would have to play against Lower Saxony and Hesse in the group. These tasks were also completed without any great difficulty, so that the semi-finals saw them face Berlin, who had played a very strong tournament up to that point. In the first real endurance test of the day, the NRW team triumphed 46:07, but it was unfortunate that national player and regular Lilli was injured in the game, meaning that she was unable to play in the final against RBW. Coach Jan had to make changes, but was still able to name a strong starting 7 due to the depth and high quality of the squad. However, the final got off to the worst possible start when the kick-off bounced back in such a way that the Baden-Württemberg team were able to score a try with their first action, which was not scored. After that, it was a back-and-forth affair – the NRW girls repeatedly made good attacking passes and were not rewarded, but they were able to dominate defensively, hardly giving RBW any space and repeatedly winning the ball back. After a turnover by Julie, the ball went via Maya and Tilda to Anna, who scored the equalizer with the last action of the first half. Emma’s try was successful and the team went into half-time with a 2-point lead. With hot temperatures and a long day, the exhaustion was palpable, but this was no reason for the NRW girls to stop. What followed in the second half was a defensive masterstroke, with the particular highlight of getting a 5m scrum, 6 phases after RBW still had a scrum of their own at the halfway line. The scrum came and Emma went short and offloaded to lead 12:05 – but the try was taken back and with about 60 seconds to go RBW got the ball back. Once again, the NRW team was able to demonstrate its strong defense, win the ball back and, with the last action of the game, it was again Anna who put the ball away to take a 12:05 lead and finally decide the game. It was a feat of strength that was rewarded in the end and meant double gold for NRW. Congratulations to all the athletes!

Text: Jan Unkelbach

There is no way around the NRW selection!
