On April 5, 2025, our Bonn Lions played their return match against SG Ruhrpott, the team they defeated in the first round. Although the visiting team was missing several players, it decided to travel to Bonn and challenge the home team. Coach James refused to concede the points without a game and was convinced of the quality of his team to rise to the challenge. So some of the Lions donned the SG jersey to play 15 v 15.
\nThe Lions’ will to win was already evident during the warm-up, and the team’s excitement and concentration were high. The Lions took the game very seriously from the kick-off on this sunny afternoon in Bonn. Our Lions scored their first try within the first 5 minutes of the game. Well-built forwards and excellent communication from the Flyhalves saw the Lions alternate between forwards and backs, which led to more tries. The Lions had already scored three tries within the first 15 minutes. However, the strong team performance did not end there. The positive mood and excitement could be felt on the part of the many fans in attendance, who cheered on the home team.<\/p>\n
The intensity and good organization in defence enabled the Lions to put up a wall. A wall that the visiting team was unable to break through during the entire first half of the match. The visiting team found it difficult to defend against Bonn’s strong attacks and so the score continued to grow. Our Lions continued to fight tirelessly and put in a strong team performance to claim the bonus points.<\/p>\n
With a very strong start to the second half, the Lions built on the convincing performance of the first half. The forward line proved itself time and time again in the ongoing physical battle, while the backline was able to break through the line again and again.
\nStill so strong defensively and still so creative offensively, the Lions scored more and more tries. It was only in the final 15 minutes that the defensive work slackened, allowing the visitors to score 17 points of their own to make the final score 70:17.<\/p>\n
Coach James’ bold decision paid off. The Lions took up the challenge with determination, put in a great performance and took the bonus points they deserved.<\/p>\n
We would like to thank SG Ruhrpott, who despite a lack of players turned up to make this lovely afternoon of rugby possible on our home pitch. We would also like to thank our fantastic Game Day Manager Alf and all our fans who came to cheer on the Lions and make this derby more than just a game!<\/p>\n
