After the bus ride, the team gathered for a joint warm-up, which was led by our captain Timo and coach James. As the first away game of the second half of the season kicked off, the motivation and determination of the Lions was palpable for all to see.
The bright sun and excellent weather conditions were unfortunately combined with a rough and narrow pitch, but that didn’t stop the visitors from Bonn from starting strongly. Indeed, the Lions opened the scoring with a fine try from Max Wiedemann after a clever move with a tap and go penalty. However, Bonn had problems defensively and allowed the home side to come back a few times. A few missed tackles and small mistakes in defense helped Münster to take the lead and break Bonn’s potential momentum. They went into the half-time break trailing but with their heads held high.

Motivated to come back and bring home points, the Loins started the second half as they had started the game, namely strongly. Bonn worked harder than ever before and were rewarded by Sam’s try after some well-organized pick-and-go phases. But the scenario of the first half repeated itself. Münster showed a strong defensive line and precise offensive work, which enabled them to break through the visitors’ defense again. While the team did not give up and kept fighting until the final whistle, substitute Nish managed to cross the line and score the Lions’ last try of the game. With a deserved score of 34:21 for the host team, Bonn’s late comeback was unfortunately not enough to at least pick up bonus points.
This rugby day and the first game of 2025 ended with a defeat and a few injuries for Bonn. Nonetheless, this game allowed the coaching staff to identify key points to work on for the upcoming games and the home derby against Cologne. We would also like to thank the Rugby Tourists Münster for the game and for hosting us on their pitch this weekend. We also wish all injured Lions a speedy and speedy recovery!
