Kick-off was at 2 p.m. in Bonn on the Rheinhaue sports field, which promised a great day of rugby with good weather and good rugby conditions. Along the touchline, the large crowd of fans, including families and former players as well as some of the Pandas (Bonn Rugby 7s team) cheered on the home team as they took to the field. The start of the game was difficult and the home team quickly conceded a first try, which was converted by RCE Rugby Club. Even though the start of the game was tough, the Lions managed to come back under pressure and responded with a nice interception from winger Chris, who flew up to the try line to score the first try of the day for the locals. The try was successfully converted by the fullback and brought the score back to 7-7. In the second part of the first half, the game quickly stabilized after the Bonn try and the defence took precedence over the attack. After a well-deserved 15-minute break, both teams came back onto the pitch with great ambition and a potential win in sight.

The second half of the match began as the first had ended: high intensity, strong tackles and forwards driving their team forward. Nevertheless, Bonn managed to gain a lineout on the Rugby Club Essen 5-meter line after a few minutes. After an initial attempt to reach the try line with a mall, Nish was stopped just inches away by the defense. Bonn then decided to play the ball wide in the second phase to take advantage of the speed of the backline as the defense had no time to adjust, and Bonn successfully scored their second try of the day! With a 14-7 lead on the scoreboard, the Lions continued to put pressure on their opponents and converted another penalty to score three points. To counter the Lions’ momentum, RC Essen made a few substitutions, which were countered by Coach James’ successful coaching for Bonn. The finishers gave RCBS Bonn an extra boost to score a final try after a positive offensive sequence. After an intense battle during a ruck situation in Essen’s 22 meters, the ball rolled out of the ruck and was picked up by Lennart who passed to the wing, resulting in a great try! The final score of 24 – 7 for Bonn ended this intense game and rugby day on the pitch. Bonn also notched up their third win of the season! Nonetheless, this very entertaining day of rugby, which ended with a Loin’s win, would not have been complete without mentioning Alf’s legendary fries, the great food and drinks on offer on the sidelines all day (stew, bratwurst, chips…), and the great organization. Thanks to all the fans and players for a great day of rugby! AwardsHammer of the day – Christo Burger Man of the match – Daniel Starting Lineup and Finishers1 – Robert 9 – Stean 2 – Golden 10 – Daniel 3 – Salih 11 – Chris 4 – Pablo 12 – Johannes 5 -Max B. 13 – Ansgar 6 – Max W. 14 – Jonas 7 – Timo 15 – Harry 8 – Lennart

Finishers: 16 – Henk 17 – Christo 18 – Max P. 19 – Max O. 20 – Benedikt 21 – Sven 23 – Nish

After last weekend’s disappointment in Dortmund, the Lions had to respond this weekend on home turf against RCE – Rugby Club Essen.
