After the cancellation of the last match by M\u00fcnster, the 3rd league matchday took place in Cologne on September 28, 2024.
\nIn ideal rugby conditions – 17 \u00b0C, cloudy and soft ground due to light rain on the previous days – the first clash between the neighboring cities began.
\nThe kick-off was well received by the Bonn team, but the very first tackle of the game resulted in a knock-on, a scrum for Cologne.
\nUnimpressed by the unfortunate start, the Bonn Lions show a strong dominance in the scrum, which is maintained for the rest of the game.
\nThe intensity of the game shows within a few minutes, Ansgar suffers a laceration on his forehead.
\nHe is able to continue the game after brief treatment, while Sven takes over his position.
\nA penalty kick for Bonn is safely kicked out of play by Josh at the Cologne 5-meter line.
\nIn the ensuing lineout, Bonn assert themselves with a strong maul and Nish scores a first try.
\nUnfortunately, Harry’s kick to increase the score does not find its way through the posts, making it 5:0 for Bonn.
\nIn the game at eye level, Max O. creates a break through the Cologne line.
\nAfter a run of 40 meters, he is caught and tackled by a Cologne player.
\nThis ruck places the team around captain Florian close to the Cologne tryline.
\nAfter a few phases, Ricardo makes it over the tryline but is tackled.
\nAfter a brief discussion between the captains and the referee, no try is awarded in Cologne’s favor and the game goes into the half-time break with a score of 5:0.
\nThe 2nd half starts unfortunately for the Bonn team.
\nThe kick-off is caught well by the Cologne team and the Bonn defense is broken with a short pass.
\nCologne take the lead at 5:7 after a successful kick to increase their lead.
\nThe Bonn Lions then established themselves in their opponents’ half, the well-coordinated Cologne defense achieved several turnovers, but possession was regained in rucks and strong lineouts.
\nA penalty in favor of the Lions is taken directly by Harry and puts the team from Bonn back in the lead.
\nSeveral changes brought fresh breath onto the court, but the game now seemed more balanced.
\nStrong defensive and offensive work by both teams makes it almost impossible to get ahead.
\nThe Lions struggled to work their way to Cologne’s 5-meter line, where they clung on for several minutes.
\nOnly strong passing from the backline forced the Cologne defense into mistakes, which Lenny exploited.
\nA try for Bonn and a successful kick to increase the lead by Harry secured Bonn’s lead until the final score of 15:7.
\nAll in all, a very intense and exciting game right to the end, in which the team from Bonn prevailed, particularly thanks to strong set-piece situations.
\nDominant scrums and lineouts, in which the ball was won several times, put the Cologne front team under pressure, while the well-positioned back team made it impossible to gain space easily with strong kick-returns and tackles.
\nRicardo in particular earned the Hammer of the Match with a series of strong tackles.
