Match report season opener<\/u> In late summer conditions, the RCBRS team led by coach James Ohlsson traveled to Paderborn on September 7, 2024 for the season opener and thus to a team with which they were able to split the series last year.
\nWhile they lost away from home last year, they were able to record a convincing win at home.
\nThe aim was therefore not only to defeat Paderborn, who are strong at home, but also to start the season as successfully and positively as possible, with 23 players around captain Flo, who started at 8 today.
\nIn the first half, the young team knew how to represent themselves well and took the lead in the first 10 minutes thanks to a penalty kick by fullback Harry.
\nThey then conceded their first try of the season after a strong crash lineout by Paderborn’s outside center, which was also scored, but they consistently held firm in the home side’s half.
\nThe decision was made several times not to kick the penalty in order to score the first try of the season.
\nHowever, the team made a mistake with one of these penalties, which led to a Paderborn try.
\nThe defense then collapsed somewhat and also conceded the third try to make the score 19:03.
\nHowever, they were then able to rally and, thanks to strong defensive actions by Pablo and Jonas, they went into the dressing room with the score level.
\nThe second half got off to a strong start and the full bench around the returning veterans Henk, Vince and Lenni was much appreciated in temperatures of around 30 degrees.
\nHenk and Lenni’s impact was particularly noticeable and put Paderborn under obvious pressure.
\nNevertheless, they scored another try to make it 26:03.
\nHowever, the Bonn team were not impressed by this and fought their way into Paderborn’s half, this time with more success and inside center Daniel was able to score the first try of the year for the Bonn Lions, and of course Harry then kicked between the posts.
\nIt seemed to herald an exchange of blows, as Paderborn also played its way through the defensive ranks again and went 33:10 ahead.
\nThe exchange of blows continued as Immi and club president Vince were substituted and Henk made an interception in front of his own try line to make it 33:15.
\nHarry increased the score to 33:17 without any problems and showed his class in defense shortly afterwards.
\nAfter a strong tackle by the opposing full-back, a turnover was recovered and a solid kick by fly-half Josh set up a line-out just outside the opposing 22.
\nThe line outs, coordinated by Timo and Flo, worked to perfection on this day and after effective phase play and very nice passes from the backline, the eventual player of the match Jonas was able to score the try at the final whistle to make it 33-22 and Harry scored the final score of 33-24 with a good kick from an acute angle.
\nIt was a physical game that was not lacking in quality in hot temperatures.
\nIt was a positive start, which nevertheless left a slightly bitter taste, as they came up short in the end.
\nIf the positive aspects are put into practice even sooner in the coming weeks, the first win will surely come soon! The players were:
