On 04.05. the RC BRS hosted the team from the Ruhr area for the last regular match of this regional league season. After winning the exciting and varied first leg for 9th place, the Lions were highly motivated to confirm this result on home turf. Unfortunately, it had already become clear in the days leading up to the game that the visitors would not be able to send a full team to the Rhine. It was here that Bonn’s efforts to expand its squad bore fruit: A number of motivated youngsters and new recruits as well as experienced old boys from the ranks of the Lions were brought in to strengthen the visitors’ ranks and yet Bonn still had a full team on the court. From the kick-off, a lively, exciting and fast-paced game developed, the intensity of which gave no indication of the extraordinary line-up on the visitors’ side. The action flowed back and forth and the home side, led by captain Florian Korbmacher, quickly scored the first points. However, the SG did not allow itself to be impressed and got more and more into a rhythm. While the visitors from the Ruhr region mainly challenged Bonn’s forwards in open play, a number of Bonn players in black pulled the strings in the SG backline. David McKenzie in particular, with all his experience, repeatedly managed to put “his” boys in the limelight and, in particular, send new signing Irakli Adeishvili, who plays at center, on almost irresistible runs towards Bonn’s malfield. On the other hand, the heavy boys in blue had clear advantages at the set pieces, especially at the lanes, and were able to reward themselves for this good work with several striker attempts. Timo Jakobs<\/strong>, who was later named man of the match<\/strong> for his strong performance, deserves a special mention. After Bonn took a narrow lead at the break, the SG got into the game better after the restart. Quickly played penalties repeatedly forced the defense into reverse and allowed them to score points, for example through the aforementioned later hammer of the match Irakli Adeishvili<\/strong>. It even looked for a short time as if the SG would take the win, but the Lions were ultimately able to fight their way to a 36:29 victory – now mainly thanks to fine backcourt combinations and impressive solo runs. After the final whistle, the visitors surprised the home side with a humorous trophy for their penultimate place and both teams enjoyed the upcoming Rhine in Flames celebrations in their immediate neighborhood.
