Before the match against the cathedral city reserve, the home side’s first team welcomed Heusenstamm for a basement clash in the Bundesliga 1. As the game progressed, it became clear to the Bonn fans watching that they were in for some exciting pitch conditions. After the first league match had left its mark on Cologne’s “green”, which was already in poor condition, even more intense and heavy hail fell shortly before kick-off, leaving Cologne’s pitch in a wretched state at kick-off, bordering on unplayable. As a result, the game was characterized by handling errors and slippage, and distinguishing between the mud-soaked teams became a real art. Cologne initially coped better with the conditions and consequently got off to the better start. They established themselves in front of the Bonn backline at the start of the first half and after the Bonn Lions were initially able to successfully fend off various attacks, the home side scored their first try. Driven by clever kicks from Fly Half and later Man of the Match Philipp Gerbecks, the Bonn side then worked their way deep into Cologne’s half on several occasions. Ultimately, however, no points could be taken home despite various promising attacks, as several times on the literal last meters the wet and cold hands did not mesh as well as usual and even the usually so sure Johannes Dziuba missed a penalty kick on the difficult ground. At the other end, Bonn’s defense also held firm and the score was 5:0 at half-time.

The second half offered a meteorological interplay of sun and rain, but still no rugby for speed enthusiasts. On the other hand, those who enjoyed hard tackles and lots of scrums were in for a treat. In particular, Sam Schröder, who returned from injury to play at number 8, put in a fine performance at the end of Bonn’s scrum and in the defensive line, earning himself the title of Hammer of the Match. Bonn’s defense also dealt out many other good hits, but could not prevent the home side from scoring two more tries, one of which was scored. They were also helped by inaccuracies and impatience on Bonn’s part, which repeatedly turned promising attacks into opportunities for Cologne to counter-attack. On the plus side, however, Bonn’s kicking game was clearly in evidence, so it was ultimately only logical that 10-man Gerbecks was able to serve debutant Josh Talbot with a fine cross-kick for his first try in the first game. Unfortunately, neither the increase nor the subsequent chase to catch up was successful. Instead, RSV scored one more try in the final minutes, resulting in a somewhat too clear final score of 22:5.

Even if the result cannot satisfy anyone in Bonn, the team put in a solid performance in the toughest of conditions, fought with self-sacrifice until the end and showed a lot of good actions in defense. In view of the many Bonn Lions who did not make the cut but still found their way to Cologne, one can also be confident that the pleasing development of the team’s personnel will soon have positive effects and that the team will go into the playoffs – whatever they may be – with even more vigor and, above all, more offensive wit.

Text: Florian Korbmacher
Photos: Anke Rolfes

Nothing to get on the Cologne lake district After the home win against Paderborn, the 1st XV of the RC BRS traveled to Cologne on 23.03.2024 for the next away game of the season.
