From the kick-off, the expected tough game against the visitors from the Grand Duchy developed. Initially, Luxembourg managed to establish a foothold in Bonn’s half, but a spirited defensive performance by the Lions, led by captain Dziuba, prevented them from getting through with some strong tackles. As a result, they actually managed to open up the game a little more and get out of the red zone with free kicks. However, after a scrum of their own on the level of Bonn’s 22m line, the initiated attack turned into a boomerang: Walferdange won the ball and played across the entire field in several phases until the rest of the defense was no longer able to prevent them from running in on the wing. Spurred on by the deficit, the RCBRS found a good answer straight after the kick-off and, after a lane, were able to carry the ball via fast phase play to just outside the box, where they were unfortunately unable to reward themselves in the final step. Instead, Walferdange succeeded in forcing the game back into Bonn’s half. At the end of a lengthy defensive sequence, Bonn were awarded a penalty try and a yellow card, leaving the score at 0:12. Outnumbered, they failed to rebuild with the kick-off and Walferdange scored another try just three minutes later. However, the Lions proved their morale and were able to play their way through the back line after an alley of their own. The breakthrough was achieved with fast passing across the entire field
and finally the much-acclaimed follow-up try by Vincent Martinet. The game was now open and both teams fought for every meter of space, which led to many set-piece situations. With a correspondingly high pulse and an intermediate score of 5:17, the team went into the half-time break. After Luxembourg kicked off the second half, Bonn’s defense was initially able to force a mistake, but then lost the ball at the scrum. Walferdange converted the resulting penalty kick to
Lane and was subsequently able to score a try, the increase failed. The game just rippled along for the next 20 minutes, until another Walferdange try once again provided the platform for a nice Bonn phase: After a kick, the Löwen backline managed a clever return run, which was carried forward to just before the halfway line. Unfortunately, the lack of luck was again directly punished and Walferdange scored another try on the counter-attack. The score was 5:34 in the 63rd minute. The Lions now mobilized all their strength once again and, also thanks to their
substitute, to some good actions. A phase of wild back and forth and ball losses on both sides ensued. A good crossfield kick from Luxembourg finally broke through the Bonn defense to score another try, and the conversion was also successful. In the last 10 minutes or so, the Lions lost their strength and the game ended with a score of 5:60. After the winter break, the Lions will take some lessons from a hard-fought game, but also a lot of positives into the upcoming away game against Düsseldorf.

Hammer of the Day: Max Oosten
Player of the Match: Francesco Forin

Text: Christoph Nienhaus
Pictures: Anke Rolfes

Young Löwen team to start the second half of the season against the league leaders from Luxembourg At the start of the second half of the season, the RCBRS welcomed the team from Walferdange to the Rheinauen.
